Heads-Up Computing: A New Interaction Paradigm for Wearable Intelligent Assistants

      Heads-up computing is an emerging concept in human-computer interaction (HCI) that focuses on natural and intuitive interaction with technology. By making technology more seamlessly integrated into our lives, heads-up computing has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with devices. With the rise of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and GPT4, the vision of heads-up computing is becoming much easier to realize. The combination of LLMs and heads-up computing can create more proactive, personalized, and responsive systems that are more human-centric. However, technology is a double-edged sword. While technology provides us with great power, it also comes with the responsibility to ensure that it is used ethically and for the benefit of all. That's why it is essential to place fundamental human values at the center of research programs and work collaboratively among disciplines. As we navigate through this historic transition, it is crucial to shape a future that reflects our values and enhances our quality of life.

报告人简介

      Shengdong Zhao is a Professor in the School of Creative Media and the Department of Computer Science at City University of Hong Kong. He established and led the Synteraction (formally NUS-HCI) research lab in 2009. Dr. Zhao received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto and a Master's degree in Information Management & Systems from the University of California, Berkeley. With extensive experience in developing innovative interface tools and applications, such as Draco (which won the best iPad App of the year in 2016), Dr. Zhao is a regular contributor to top-tier HCI conferences and journals like CHI, ToCHI, Ubicomp/IMWUT, CSCW, UIST, IUI, and MobileHCI. He also served as a senior consultant with Huawei Consumer Business Group in 2017. An active member of the HCI community, Dr. Zhao often serves on program committees for major HCI conferences and was the paper chair for ACM SIGCHI in 2019 and 2020. He pioneered the concept of Heads-up Computing in 2017, contributing to several key projects and publications in this area, including a featured article in the September issue of Communications of the ACM.
